Last week a midwife spoke out against the decision by Newham social services not to tell foster parents that a baby could have HIV. She's now been suspended. Did she do the right thing or was she silly to go to the media as she did? Should she have protected her identity and perhaps saved herself from suspension? Do you agree that she's been suspended?

Interesting problem..i think the foster family should be told, but not sure the midwife went about the problem approporitaly.  I would hope she had exhausted all correct methods of raising her concern and would HOPE the hospital was supportive and did all they could to have the Social Services inform the foster parents.  As nurses or a midwife we would use universal precautions when dealing with bodily fluids, parents and maybe foster parents ( i dont know) may not use gloves so there could eb a risk of passing on any disease in fecal matter..but to be honest, I don't know if HIV can be passed in feaces?

I think the foster carers should know, but not sure that was the correct way to raise the concern.

I agree with you Robert, I think the foster family should have been told but not sure that going to the media was appropriate. Maybe she had tried other ways and hit a brick wall.

I agree with you Robert. Never mind faeces, I have 3 children and have dealt with more cuts than I care to remember. The foster parents should definately have been told. I hope she had exhausted every other option but I suspect she hasn't. A lesson to us all.

The NHS don't take kindly to staff divulging information to the media. In one of my contracts it stated that I wasn't to do this. I'm not surprised she's been suspended after seeing her interview on tv. I agree that the family have a right to know even if the maternal mother states they are not to know but staff running to the media is not the way to go about it. She could lose her job over this.
