I had my blood taken last tuesday and as soon as the nurse put the needle into my arm it started to swell up and was extremely painful which resulted in me passing out. Now my arm is still very swollen and i have a bruise from above my elbow down to my hand , i am unable to straighten my arm as it is so painful and my arm feels extremely tight around the inside of my elbow - does anyone know why this is and if there is anything i can do to ease the pain ??

Hi, I'm a student nurse so get to your GP or ask an RN... But don't worry. Bruising is pretty normal after a blood test usually around the area on your skin where the needle went in. If it is red or swelling you may have an infection and should see your GP for advice. If it is a larger area like you described it may be because of bleeding under the skin. Normally because of a lack of pressure on the jab site after the test was done or another vein or vessel had been damaged by the needle during the test. it can be painful but bruises are usually harmless. Go see your GP or RN though to be sure.

Good luck
