Posted over 3 years ago I am a trained nurse wishing to return to practice, which I am finding very difficult. Nobody seems to have information or can give me any information, regarding trusts which run this course. I am also finding that I do not receive any replies from e-mails or from leaving voice mails. Obvioulsy, there is not a demand for trained nurses wishing to return to the profession, I am more than happy to work as as an HCA until I can do the course, but I seem to be hitting a brick wall any suggestions !!! |

| Posted over 3 years ago Hi Janice, Welcome to ProNurse! I'm sorry to hear that you've been hitting a brick wall but you've come to the right place? Are there any uni's in your area that you can check online to see if they do the Return to Nursing course? Who have you contacted in the past? Nobody seems to respond to emails these days, you've got to keep calling! Don't give you, you will get there. You could do some agency shifts to help you gain some experience and of course some extra cash :) How long have you been out of nursing? Cx Claudia |

| Posted over 3 years ago Hi Claudia, I am in London and I have tried to contact Kings College as they seem to be the only uni doing the course and apparently only in September, they do not answer e-mails and the phone number that I found is incorrect. I have been out of practice for a long time, but kept my hand in with with nursing assistance. I cannot work agency as I cannot give 2 clinical references, my speciality is renal and I did speak to somebody at the guys/thomas trust and applied for an hca post in renal outpatients, putting down the information that I was told to. No further reply, I know I will have to start as an HCA, but that is not a problem, it is a problem trying to hget a position, but not to worry I will keep on persevering. PS I have been out a long!!!! time. Janice |

| Posted over 3 years ago Are there other jobs going in other trusts near you besides Tommys and Guys? You could join the hospital agency and take it from there. They will ensure that you update your mandatory training which is a start as you've been out for awhile. Does Greenwich do a return to nursing course? I'm sure they did but it could all have changed now. I'll have a look for you. Kings are normally good but I have found that there are wrong numbers and email addresses which is a pain! Have you tried to contact the tutor directly? They may still be trying to catch up on stuff from before the hols - no excuse I know as you just want an answer. Don't give up. You sound so passionate about wanting to return to practice. Cx Claudia |

| Posted over 3 years ago Hi Claudia, Thank you for that information I really appreciate that, I will call the number for city of london tomorrow and see if I have any joy. Ironically I applied for an HCA post on the renal unit at Bart's as that is my speciality and I received an e-mail today to say that it was and error and had been withdrawn. Oh well I will keep plodding on. |

| Posted over 3 years ago Oh Janice, I'm sorry to hear that. The post could have been withdrawn due to financial reasons. Keep searching, you'll find something. Have a look at the NHS job website. I'm sure you will find something there. Keep at the uni's. You will get to do that course soon. Cx Claudia |

| Posted over 3 years ago Hi Janice, I have just started a Return to Nursing Course, I am having to travel approx 80miles to attend lectures once a week and 20 miles to carry out my work placement which will also be hopefully once a week. I am also having to pay over £500 for the 'priviledge'. This, I have heard is cheap compared to other trusts, some of whom were apparently charging up to £1000. After many, many phonecalls and 'overlooked' emails I was told that our local trust would not be running a Return to Practice course for the forseeable future as there is no longer a high number of vacancies to be filled. Anyway I don't know why I am telling you this, but I just wanted to say don't give up! Just keep pestering, but phonecalls are better it is not so easy to be ignored then! I am enjoying my course, and even if I don't get a permanent job after it I will just be pleased to be a Registered Nurse again. Good Luck, I hope you find a course nearby. |

I have also had an interview at Addenbrookes for an HCA post and I am just waiting to hear, but everything is so long winded. Anyway good luck, you were lucky with £500.

| Posted over 2 years ago Hi Janice and everyone I dont know if youve found a Return to Practice Course as yet, but i had the same problem. Took me thee years before I got on one, but thats another story! Ive just finished last December 2008 and currently waiting for results. I wrote a book about my experiences with links to places that do offer the course with other helpful advice that I wished someone had told me. I just uploaded it to Lulu.com today http://stores.lulu.com/store.php?fAcctID=944010. it's called 'So you want to return to Nursing? for £4.50 and £2.50 for the download. A portion out of each sale is going towards NurseAid. I hope that was helpful. Or send me an email anytime if you need any support. Good luck Candy |

| Posted over 2 years ago Hi I have the same problem trying to return to nursing none of my local trusts are taking people on to do return to nursing, and no local universities are doing the course. The the next nearest are only taking people who live in their county. I have rang NMC to complain but they did not care. The funny thing is my local trust has just recruited nurses from abroad to fill the gaps ! |

| Posted over 2 years ago It looks like were all having the same problem. I remember a few years back, nursing trusts were giving a £1000 to encourage nurses to return. If I find a course, I will let you know.

| Posted over 2 years ago hi, feeling a little heartened now that I have read that there are others in the same position - I trained as an RNMH (learning disablities) many moons ago and recently have toyed with the idea of returning to nursing. But I would like to convert to general and there is even less info out there about this. I'm sure in the 'old' days as a RNMH I would have been the equivalent of an enrolled nurse if working in general nursing ( as did my junior surgical and medical modules but not the senior ones in the last 18 months) and they then offered conversion courses lasting 18 months for them to become registered. But now I'm faced with 3 years training as noone seems to have a clue about accredited learning and prior training - aarrgghh! Why is it so difficult? Have found NMC and RCN sites useless, sorry if this statement offends :o) |

Right, I too have been trying to casually looking at how to re register if I ever became fit to work again and after many months I too was hitting that brick wall of nada.
Finally, like a day ago, I found out what to do and why it’s next to impossible to find info. The clue came from the NMC. To re register you need to do a return to practice course, note the wording practice not nursing, that’s enough to make a Google search come up with no results.
Next the return to practice courses have to be funded by a Trust, or I guess a private concern like GP or BUPA. So you’re not going to get any information on the web. You need to pay a visit to the Trusts Human Resources department and see if they are going to be funding that year.
Coincidently I also discovered where the bees are going, but that’s another story. However solving two mysteries in a month, man I’m cooking on gas!

| Posted over 2 years ago Hi, I'm currently on a Return to Practice course at Grantham through University of Nottingham. It takes about 4 months to complete with 8 days in Uni. There's a minimum of 100 hours clinical practice, also a 4000 word portfolio of proficiencies. These are NMC requirements. It cost £1000 and I had to find my own placement which is of course unpaid. I think it's terrible that I had to pay to do this when I have friends in comparable professions, ie teaching, who are actually paid to go back. |

| Posted over 2 years ago Hi Janice, Welcome to ProNurse. You've had lots of good advice, from your new friends, to help you on your way. Don't waste time e-mailing and telephoning anywhere until you have real evidence from your internet surfing that they actually do the return to practice nursing courses (thanks Pete). You can download clever Candy's e-book. You'll get there, nothing worth having comes easy. Best wishes. Nev.

| Posted over 2 years ago Hi simpli_c_y2005, Well done Candy for producing a book, it is easy to do just that, to help others and earn a little bit of cash. Very clever - a good example to others. You just need to increase your keywords to increase your sales - you could add return to practice, return to nursing practice, nurse, nursing, etc. This will increase your profile, your hits and your sales. Excellent. Nev. "HEART STYLING - Nev - Your Personal Heart Stylist Coach - can strengthen you to set your sighs low, and your sights high! | Posted over 2 years ago The problem is Nic, the majority of NHS Trusts have been in dept each year and have frozen on recruiting qualified nurses, let alone retraining them. Unlike schools, the Trusts must be spending large amounts of the budget elsewhere to be running up huge depts.
The DSS probably don’t have the budget either under back to work schemes to fund you. But from an unregistered nurse to a practicing one, a grand would be a far superior investment than some of those silly retraining courses you do get sent on which are far below the minimum qualifications any real employer is looking for.

| Posted over 2 years ago It's sad to find out that many nurses are having trouble returning to practice. We must be very lucky in Wales as the Welsh Assembly will fund nurses to return to practice through NHS Trusts over 12w. I'm just looking into my phlebotomist returning to practice. She's bored with taking bloods and wants to return to nursing. I'l lbe supporting her all the way as I know she will be an asset to our team. I'm not going to give up. We need more nurses! |

| Posted over 2 years ago @mata Ann Keen said contact your Strategic Health Authority in a recent, but disappointing Q&A session in The Sun recently. I think I would be more inclined to contact my nearest Trust's human resources department by phone or cold call, I think they would know what department in the Trust is funding courses. I wouldn’t bother with the university at all, as the university would be able to tell you when courses start and what was in them, but that’s about it.
PS post here how you get on, as on a personal level I’d be interested which one was able to answer your question, Trust or Strategic Health Authority.
