Posted about 1 year ago My local area news said today that there is going to be some serious cost cutting in the health service which could lead to thousands of job loses across the board. Is it worth embarking on a new career in nursing that could lead to nothing.... and also the proposed retirement age limit being scrapped.... employee's can stay on at work for a lot more years reducing the amount of jobs available. Just a little food for thought. On a positive note... by the time I qualify it will all change again !! Anyone else worried about these rapid cut backs and changes as regards moving into the health service and affecting a hard earned career ?? |

| Posted about 1 year ago I am wondering the same thing myself! Having just finished my second year and having heard lots of third years bemoaning the fact that they cannot get a job I am at an all time low and not at all motivated to start my own third year. All we can hope is that things will improve but I don't see that happening by next September! If the worst comes to the worst I will do bank nursing until a job does become available but don't really relish that idea as no doubt all the jobless nurses will be doing the same. I am lucky that I have kept a contract with my current employer as an HCA, hopefully this will increase my chances of being offered bank work as a staff nurse later, it's the hope I am clinging to anyway!! |

| Posted about 1 year ago well.... I had a letter this morning from another college that's closer to home asking me to come in for a interview for the access course, I will also have to do some basic English & maths tests and submit a 500 word essay from multiple choices on the day. I personally live in the real world and believe that 'life is what you make it'.... I'm going to give it 100 percent regardless. |

| Posted about 1 year ago I am worried about starting Nursing and getting a job at the end- however I can't see how they can make all these cut backs and cope? Currently on the ward I work on- we are very thin on the ground with staff and we are rushing around like crazy everyday to get everything done. I really think in 3 years time there will be more jobs available but the whole system will be different. Im just going to go with the flow and hope for the best. :) |

| Posted about 1 year ago People who worry about there being no jobs: I just wonder what you'll do instead that pays you over £20k basic and which you've more chance of getting a job than in nursing? Nobody (at nurse level) is guaranteed jobs in this world, but few professions offer you a better chance of one or a more in-demand qualification. I packed in the NHS to go full time agency, and I can guarantee that every week I'll be offered at least two or three interviews for full time jobs - and this is from employers and agencies I've told, often many times, that I'm not interested in a permanent job. If I really started looking I know I'd be inundated with them, and believe me, I'm nothing special and haven't been qualified that long. As long as you don't limit yourself - I'll only take a job if it's a short bus ride away, I'll only take a job in theatre, I only want a job where my mates work, or whatever - you will get a job. Don't believe the scare stories. if you want to be a nurse, then be one. |

| Posted about 1 year ago When I was mining I was on 40k basic, approx 50k with bonus and I did not even have a mine engineering degree. You can leave uni after 3 years as a mine engineer (male or female) and your start pay can be 30-40k a year and work all over the world, I could have gone to Australia and worked underground as a contract drill & blast miner for $1000 aus dollars a shift.... no bull. I want a complete career change and I have wanted to get into nursing for over 10 years.... a big decision for me and convinced the right one... for me its not about the money its about being someone.... Some good tips from Croatoan... thanks. |

| Posted about 1 year ago I wasn't trying to be a nay-sayer! I have wanted to be a nurse for 17 years now and am a very mature student who did years of studying with the OU before I was able to take up a place on a nursing course due to family committments. I am already very well qualified, money does not come into it at all, nursing is what I want to do, if necessary I will continue in my present job as an HCA until a job turns up. In the area where I live nursing jobs are very hard to find and even agency work is hard to come by, I know as lots of my friends do agency work and are finding it tough, two years ago it was a very different story. As regards to being prepared to travel, it is a must here as the nearest hospital is 30 miles away, whichever direction you go in!

| Posted about 1 year ago I am just starting out and live in Cornwall, lovely place to live but expensive because its a tourist trap. Just had a look in my area for HCA positions and there's quite a few advertised.... all about £6 - £7 per hour ??? is that the normal going rate in the UK, min wage after tax etc. Im not surprised most HCA's do their nurse training to try to better themselves... take my hat off to them. Cornwalls largest hospital is in Truro which is approx 20 miles from me so to get a position there I would like 'loudjezebel' have to think about the fuel costs, parking, travel time as it all adds up at the end of the month. I think maybe luck and determination is the key to getting your dream job.... and being very confident at interview. I now have another concern.... enhanced CRB checks, I was put on probation and had to do 180 hours community service when I was in my late teens (nothing sinister).... Im talking 25 years ago, boys will be boys but I never thought it would come round to haunt me after all this time.... I thought I had paid my dues to society for my stupidity and learnt a hard lesson from it, 8 years in the military shaped me up rather quickly, it did not seem to bother them in the slightest that I had a black mark against me. I had a basic CRB check done in the 1990 when I started mining because I was using explosives every day and that came back okay ?? rules are rules I guess, see what happens. |

| Posted about 1 year ago £7 an hour is pretty high for HCA jobs. Basic wage is £5.80 and I'd guess most HCAs, in the private sector anyway, are on that and I don't think a band 2 in the NHS is on much more. Utterly scandalous for the job they do.

| Posted about 1 year ago Rusty, I live on the edge of Dorset, Exeter, Yeovil, Taunton and Dorchester hospitals all roughly 30 miles away, I earn £8.25 per hr basic after 10 years in the NHS as a Band 2, working nights and weekends bumps it up quite a bit but I don't even drive and my poor partner has to ferry me back and forth so it ends up as 120 miles worth of petrol for every shift I do!! Madness I know but I love my job and fortunately as we also run our own business I don't do it for the money LOL! |

| Posted about 1 year ago I dont think I could do 120 mile round trip but it just goes to show how committed you are.... your husband too. Yes, the west country is a great place to live but there's a bit of a art to it as regards survival. The wages are always lower than anywhere else and the cost of living higher, its almost as if your paying the government extra because its classed as country living. I have my college interview this Monday 16 Aug along with the entrance tests and 500 word essay, fingers crossed I will pass and be asked back for the 2nd interview a week later. |
