Just a little rant.  I know the olden time of Matrons being old battle axes have long gone, enrolled nurses being second rate citizens in green with RGN's in blue has long gone - but in my trust all male HCA's and Staff nurses have the same colour uniform except for poxy little epaulettes.  I hate it.  I worked hard to my registration, im a level one nurse, i should have  a blue tunic the same as my female counter parts.  RAAH RAAH RAAH RAAH RAAH.  anyone have any views on this - nothing will change in my trust but would be interested to hear.  i also think they should bring back the job title of senior staff nurse.  i have been qualified five years this year and think some recognition would be nice even if in the area i work, theres no chance of getting my band 6.

sorry to rant

xx

Perhaps you should join the army if rank is that important to you.

I'm an RMN and thank god that most of the places I can work I don't have to wear uniform at all.

Of course it'll be recognised, and I'm sure you're appreciated, by those that matter.  I don't think a change of uniform or some method of showing everyone you've been at the job for a while, makes any difference.

As I say, generally speaking there's no different uniforms, or no uniforms at all, as an RMN - meaning HCAs, nurses, F grades, ward managers, and at times doctors and patients, all look alike.  I think it works.  It's pretty inclusive and tends to act against the "us and them"  that goes on between staff and patients, nurses and HCAs etc, which, imo, can only be a good thing.

There are HCAs who're much better than I am at certain things, what it means is I can ask an HCA to do a job, because they may be better at it than anyone else on the ward, and the patient doesn't think he or she's being fobbed off with an HCA or newly qualified nurse when what they want (but don't need) is an experienced nurse who they often believe, usually wrongly, know everything or can fastrack them to see the doctor, which is what patients really want :-)

I will admit however, as a bloke, that as much as I work on bedside manner, I'm often thought of being at my most useful for looking big and ugly and acting as close protection for doctors and nurses when they have to see "scary" patients.......

This is what I mean, staff nurses, mators etc are more conserned about the uniform rather than the patient. {{{SHAKING MY HEAD}}}}

I don't personally care, you should all be in scrubs (EVERYONE), change when you get to work and change when you go home it's cleaner and safer for the patinet. Personally I would rather see a nurse in scrubs than a nurse in a uniform with choclate cake all down the front!!! At least I know that nurse or staff member has a clean uniform on!!
