Posted about 1 year ago I've been off sick for a week now with a chest infection. I've nearly finished a course of antibiotics and I still have quite a nasty productive cough and i'm still getting temperatures...I'm going back to my g.p tomorrow Thing is being off sick is stressing me out! last Tuesday when I found out I had a chest infection I rang my boss and told her that the doctor has told me to self certificate for a week until i've finished the antibiotics but the response I has was "do you know the score of the england game?" like as if I was off sick on purpose! I was then asked to ring in on Friday to give my manager an update and when I did she refused to speak to me and asked me to speak to a colleague who was co-ordinating that day... Then i rang again yesterday and my boss sounded quite surprised that I was still ill and that I wouldn't be coming in for my night shift (even though I told her about my self certificate form) So i told my manager that im still not 100% and I plan on visiting my g.p on wednesday and I will ring her with outcome. Eventhough I dnt think im 100% better I almost want to get bck to work to have this stress overwith! I kind of feel like im inconveniencing everyone being off sick, like i'm doing something wrong? Sorry for the moan!

| Posted about 1 year ago It's called bullying. Speak to management, tell them you don't appreciate the way you're being treated and if it doesn't stop you'll get the union involved. You've done nothing wrong, don't let them treat you as if you have. |

| Posted about 1 year ago Thanks for the above comment, there is bullying going on on the ward with some of my colleagues too but its very covert if you know what I mean?? I always wonder why some colleagues come into work when they're sick....now i know why. Even if you have something that you could carry to a patient , management just doesn't seem to care, they just care about the staffing levels! |

| Posted about 1 year ago it is bullying, however still get the sick note off the dr and send it in (she will know then that you were genuinley ill ) be aware at the end of the day you are only a clog of a very big wheel, they cannot sack you very easily, especially in the nhs, so take care of yourself. |

| Posted about 1 year ago This sounds scarily like where I work too... There is far too much bullying of this kind in the NHS and it needs to stop. You have every right to take all the time that you need to recover properly from your chest infection, if you don't then you may well just make yourself even more ill or worse pass on your illness to one of the patients. If your boss continues to be like this then a quiet word in my experience usually works, if it becomes much more regular or if the problem persists then speaking to your union is often a good way forward. Hope that you are feeling better soon. |

| Posted about 1 year ago it's the same where I work. Nursing is a terrible job for understanding when people are off sick. I have been told next time I am off sick i will have a disciplinary. All because I was off sick for 5 months, trying to find out why I was having splitting headaches for 2 1/2 years! Now, I got burnt badly by the sun last week (ended up with 2nd degree burns) but have had to come into work despite GP/practice nurse/ward Dr telling me I shouldn't be here. I can understand people being disciplined when they have saturday/sunday morningitis, however when it is genuine sickness I don't understand how they get away with it.
Report yours for bullying, it is completely wrong and very stressful for you Get better soon x |

| Posted about 1 year ago To the OP. Have you read your trust's Sickness/Absence Policy? If not then my advice would be to get hold of a copy and read every word, HR departments have a way of making this particular policy work in their favour. I have just supported a friend through " termination of contract" because of ill-health, long story but please don't think that nurses do not get "sacked" for being ill. Having said all that, you should not feel that you have to go to work when you are not well, managers should not be ringing you at home when you have sent in sick/fit notes and, yes, this does smack of bullying and should not be condoned. I hope you are now fully recovered. Take care and look after yourself. Mo.
