| Posted about 1 year ago Hi there, I trained with a student nurse 5 years ago who wanted to do the same thing. She was set to do a mental health course, then changed to paediatric.I guess she sought advice and found out she would be better doing that first. However when I first qualified I got shortlisted for an interview in a children's hospital as a mental health nurse(as an rmn). They asked for either a paediatric qualification or mental health(with evidence I had experience with children).I was a mature student and had experience with children. If you are a younger person, I'd imagine paediatric would be the way to go.If I were you I'd find out about the child mental health organisations in your area within the NHS that recruit these types of nurses and give them a call. p.s in my area there is a hospital that specialises in adolescents and my classmate got a job there straight out of uni after doing mental health. |

| Posted about 1 year ago Hi Curly Tot If you want to work in child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) you need to be a RMN. There is not a specific childrens mental health nurse training course, but you can do post registration courses in CAMHS after you have qualified as a RMN. If you did paediatric nursing you would then still need to do your mental health training, so I guess if you know you want to work in CAMHS you may as well go for your RMN training. I work in forensic CAMHS and love it. Good luck with your decision. Kez x
