| Posted about 1 year ago This was ther argument put forward by the Eugenics movement in the late nineteenth and twentieth century. It spawned among other things hitler's policy of mass murderr of people in asylums as well as the 'congregate, segregate and sterilise' policies of the Asylum era throughout Europe. It is reflected in much of what happens in Eastern Europe today and is an appalling value judgement on people who are only described as ill because society has decided to define their distress in medical terms. Show me one convincing argument for the existence of biological causes for serious and enduring mental disorders. Show me one covbinvcing reason to believe that what Schneidre called first rank symptoms of schizophrenia are biological in nature or origin. Show me one convincing reason to believe that Schneider's second rank symptoms aren't really coping strategies. We need to stop making unsubstantiated biomedical assumptions and do what really works instead of using lame guesswork about biological incurability to justify a modern form of Eugenics. Let's get back to what the original identifier of serious disorder, Euguen Bleuler understood - schizophrenia (dementia praecox in his 'glossary') is largely self-limiting and self-curing so long as we don't scupper the process by over use of tranquilisation that prevents people from thinking through their difficulties. Cheers, Stuart
