I have been looking for info about childcare as I have a 10 year old who will be in Year 6, if I get a place.. I can't find anything helpful-it seems that for her age group there are just playschemes and after school clubs.  I don't  have family within 20 miles and my husband works fulltime. Has anyone found a way of managing this problem??

Thanks!!

Hmm, I'm the wrong person to be suggesting anything as I don't have kids... I'm sure some of the mothers on here will reply eventually. Sounds like a difficult situation... You may have to use your childcare allowance to help pay for an after school nanny or babysitter.

hi there, i dont have any kids either sorry but ive a good friend who is studying at uni with an 8yr old, im not sure how she funds it, but she has a registred chidminder who picks up her daughter from school/afterclub and takes her home until my friend picks her up after uni. when on placement she arranges with the childminder to look after her, id speak to your chosen unis financial adviser and a local benefits office to see if you are entitled to anything to help cover the cost, and maybe checkout some local reg chidminders, i hate to say it but my friend was in the same position and it seemed to be the only option she had, hope you work summin out

regards

Childcare is a difficult issue especially when the children leave primary school. There is very little available for a child in Year 7 and above.

I have recently done a Return to Practice course and am now working a nurse. I am also a single mother and all my family live overseas. My ex lives 4 hours away.  I work in theatres and this has helped with being able to find childcare as work times are more flexible.

During my course  I was able to find a before school club starting at 7.30am for my 2 at primary and after school till 6pm. I did have to arrange to leave work at 5.30pm (instead of the usual shift finishing time of 6pm). As I was on a Return to Practice course there was more flexibility for hours as I didn't get paid or get a bursary.

At the moment I use before and afterschool clubs for my daughter in Year 5. My daughter in Year 7 gets dropped off by a friend at about 4.30pm and then is at home by herself till about 6pm. I am not able to do regular shifts so can only work on the nurse bank as I can regulate my own hours.

I also find the Working Tax credit scheme totally unusable for people who don't have regular hours or work. I could claim but haven't bothered as you need to put in the number of hours you use childcare on a weekly basis (for me this changes week by week). I know that ringing them up each week to change the hours would have a high chance of things going wrong.
