Posted about 1 year ago Hello! I started on the pre-reg mental health diploma nursing course in September and I am loving both the academic work and the placements. I have a query and hope that someone can give me some guidance: I have been married for 5 years, have just turned 31 and am considering getting two years of my course complete and then getting pregnant. Currently you get 45 weeks 'paid' maternity and then I would return to the course with a slightly higher bursary which will help to cover childcare for my final year. My worry is that the diploma is finishing and they are moving to the degree at my Uni (I think April 10 is the last diploma intake) so when I am ready to return, it is likely that there won't be the option to continue a diploma. I would be happy moving accross to degree but I need the money I get for the diploma. When I ask the nhs bursary people about whether they will be introducing a non-means tested bursary for the degree when the diploma ends, they have no idea!!! I am not sure who can advise me now. Any ideas? Thanks :o) |

| Posted about 1 year ago Hello there
Im in a similar position, I am in my first year and wishing to fall pregnant asap really. I just cant wait any longer. I belive that as long as you are in receit of the diploma bursary you will continute to recieve this until the end. I very much doubt they will bring in a non-means tested degree bursary as i belive they are discouraging people who are only coming to do this qualification for the money. mental i know, but i know plenty of woman who are using this as a stepping stone and getting paid for the privaleged! |

| Posted about 1 year ago no wonder nurse training costs the government so much, with so many people planning to use it to fund their pregnancies! |

| Posted about 1 year ago Oh...and I also wanted to add - all the best to the lady in the same position as me - please let me know if you hear any more news - and I will keep you posted on this thread |
Can i just say to this person that I have been a tax payer for 12 years - I hate people who play the system - that is not my aim! A bursary is about £7k/year and you get a max of 45 weeks maternity - surely maternity pay when working full time is more than this!! I fully intend to complete my training - I have had excellent feedback to date and a 2:1 on my first assignment after 12 years of being out of education. I don't have to justify myself but I will!
