I am due to be seen by a community nurse regarding a personal problem that I have.

I have been on holiday and during the week this nurse left a message on my answer phone so that anybody could listen to it and know what clinic she was from.  That was bad enough because my carer and my daughter were around in the house to listen to the answer phone and neither knew I had a problem.  She telephoned me to apologise and in the course of the conversation I also found that my daughter had answered the telephone and the nurse told her which clinic she was from, so my daughter now definately knows but has not said anything.  This in my eyes is two breaches of confidentiality.  What should I do?

If you only want to ensure she doesn't make the same mistake again, you could try to contact her.  Pointing out the problem without complaining officially would be a good way to avoid any future issues and also avoid causing her any issues with her managers.  Nurses, and pretty much all HCPs, have the importance of confidentiality beaten into them 3 times a week from the first day of training onwards, so if you speak to her, that may be enough.

The key is to decide what you want to achieve, avoiding future issues or actually complain because you are aggrieved. Your call though.

Completly agree with Owen's post.. Always best to speak to the person involved first

Yup I totally agree. Confidentiality is one of the primary responsibility of nurses. You must first talk with her and then afterwards if she doesn't want to talk about it, then you can talk to the proper authority regarding what she had done.
