Hello, I have a question I would like to ask. I would like to train to be a midwfe, however my RGN experience doesnt have any Gynae experience attached to it. I like to try new things and expand my horizons, but also I have an interest in the way maternity care is delivered. What I would lke to ask is, is it advisable to become a Maternity Care Assistant before undertaking an 18month midwifery course? I like to push myself and have new challenges. I look forward to hearing your feedback - thanks.

It wouldn't hurt to work as a maternity care assistant, but you don't need to.

I'm a direct entry midwife and I did a week on a maternity ward (work experience) before being offered a place, so having no maternity experience won't go against you.

Good luck with your future journey.

Hi Sallyia

I staffed in gynae prior to midwifery training and I can't honestly say that it was that essential. I think you should go where your heart leads you, whatever the mini hurdles.Midwifery can be very rewarding and it needs people with a passion-whatever their background. Nursing ISN'T essential in any case. I have never regretted doing nursing first-in fact I returned to it after 12 years in midwifery It can be helpful when there are health issues but these are taught in the training in any case-hence the popularity of direct entry.

If you want to do it, go for it. Good luck.
