I’m a mature (27yrs) student paediatric nurse in the UK. I‘m arranging my 4week elective in July/August 2010. I would love to go to a Childrens Hospital in America, there dosen't seem to be much information on UK students going to the USA for placements. I am hoping to make contact with anyone that can advise me on how to go about this. Maybe you or someone you know have done this?

I would greatly appreciate any advice, thank you all in advance.

Nursing is very VERY different in US than UK- first, there is only "general" nursing, not children. adult, LD, etc.

Second, education is different- the placements are monitored not by the hospital staff but by university staff....

third, liability insurance costs a fortune and you have to have it to practice there. You would find I think that a US placement would be very dear.

The model of care is different than here, terminology, drugs, care planning, documentation, nurse education, and the very nature of nursing are all different... what is it that you hope to get out of a placement there? Your elective shoudl prepare you for practice, not just be a holiday (not saying thats what you want) and it seems there would be placements more likely to help you than one that is so different.

WOuld be interested in talking it through with you if you want!

Hi Nicky,

I did my electice placement in the Republic of Ireland. I would recommend you using this placement to get experience that you wouldn't normally get from your placements on the NHS but I agree with Bethann re the states. It is v different there than here. Why not chose to work in a UK hospital like Great Ormond Street or some other specialist paeds hospital?

Nursing is the largest health care occupation plus nurses working in private health care or for corporate companies. The information available here is great thanks for sharing with us.

I am sure that after you will go in USA you will find that nursing is very different and you might love the new concept or want to come back in UK, anyway this is something you must feel on your own skin and you should not be influenced by other people. When I made social justice masters programs I liked a lot the techniques used to learn new material, I studied a lot but I will never be sorry about my choice, now I found a good job and gain money for a new car.
