Posted over 2 years ago Hello All, My first post.
I am just embarking on an Access to Health Science course (eveing courses as I`m a full-time Dad). I plan on going into Psychiatric Nursing,so doing some googlin came across this site & feel the right place, right time has stepped up for me :D So all being well & I do well on the Access course. Is there a particular direction I should be aiming for when I get onto the nursing course (that would be the appropriate course, yes?)at University? I know getting ahead of myself but I believe in the forewarned, fore armed ideals LOL.
Well as said this is a whole new journey & maybe even though I am now 40 I think I can certainly make a difference in my life & hopefully (Pray to the gods of Valhalla) I can in Psychiatric nursing. Thank`s very much & hope you can spare time to answer the above, give advice.
Thank`s Jason

| Posted over 2 years ago Being that i have just embarked on my career, I feel a note to yourself. The university i studied at are doing away with the diploma this is not the case everywhere but highlights the need to possibly looking into what is required of someone who is udertaking the degree. i must say the course you are doing is a fantastic start, as it will prove useful even if it does not now. If you have not already look to work in a psychiatric hospital on the bank, so you can get a true feeling of what is expected. Despite age and family responsibilies you will be a complete asset to the services. As formal qualifications although as essential it is paperwork that certifies you bein able to practice, but it is the life experience which patients will wish to draw from you. Happy to add any additional info if you shall require any. Good luck on your evening course

| Posted over 2 years ago Hi CC, Thank`s for the reply & congrats on becoming a qualified nurse. I don`t know on the university stance (plan on Teesside btw) concerning diploma`s. I think this access course will indeed be an elightment into the nursing field thus into Psychiatric nursing. I`m not clear on the "If you have not already look to work in a psychiatric hospital on the bank" comment. Bank? I am hoping to get into St Lukes which is my local Psychiatric Hospital.
Thank`s for the boost in confidence about being of use already. That does make one want to succeed in this career path. I`m more than happy to take any more information, useful tips etc that will help me with my course & into Psychiatric nursing. Again Thank`s CC & congrats again.

| Posted over 2 years ago Claire had her discovery day at Teesside uni yesterday. Apparently they are offering BOTH Degree & Diploma courses & you can do a combined one as well. So mine`s not till Jan so I have some time to think about this.

| Posted over 2 years ago Hi Jason, Welcome to Pronurse. I have no advice because the topic of becoming a student is so broad. Except perhaps this.... Stick with the forum because there are plenty of people here to help with the inevitable questions and occasional moral dilemmas you'll experience in your training. And enjoy psych nursing - it's a brilliant career. Cheers, Stuart |

| Posted over 2 years ago Age is no consquence Jason ---- I completed my access coures in June 2006 aged 46. I wasnt the oldest in my cohort at uni -- many people are over 50 and under 20. Honestly, enjoy the experience - the younger ones can party and still do their essays in time lol and the older ones worry more ...
