If I told you that eating two grapefruits every morning and drinking two strong cups of coffee helped you lose a stone in two weeks you probably wouldn’t believe me.

However, there’s a good chance that you’d click on the headline to read the article.

There’s an article from the Daily Mail in the news feed today that I could have published here on ProNurse.

It has the headline The fast way to slow down the ageing process and it examines claims that fasting every other day not only helps weight loss but could help you live longer.

It would have earned quite a few page views, but there would have been grumbles in the comments, either here on the ProNurse site or on our <a href = “http://www.facebook.com/pages/ProNurse/147173863400?ref=mf” TARGET="_blank">Facebook fan page.

Partly because a fair number of nurses are fed up with the NHS bashing done by the Daily Mail, but also because it’s another report based on scientific research that claims the chance of huge health benefits.

We see the headline, scan the article, say something along the lines of “Yeah, right!” and get on with our day. Nurses, more than the average person, know how to stay healthy.

It’s the simple mantra of eating fruit and veg, exercising, avoiding too much processed food, being sensible about alcohol, not smoking and looking both ways when you cross the road.

It doesn’t make for the best headlines though.

We know we need to do these things to stay healthy but life is for living and we often don’t have time to make the extra effort to improve our diet or fit in exercise.

However, we do seem to have the time to read all those articles that claim quick health fixes.

And that’s the problem. If we didn’t read the articles the media would stop publishing them.
