Should nursing students quit smoking as part of their training?
This is one of the suggestions from a study into Italian nursing students published in the <a href = “http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/123190445/abstract” TARGET="_blank">Journal of Advanced Nursing.
The authors also make the point that decreasing the number of smokers among healthcare professionals would discourage people from smoking and increase the credibility of anti-smoking campaigns.
Is this a sensible suggestion or just another hardship for student nurses to put up with? Student nurses currently have to learn drug calculations and an obsession for cleanliness, not to mention the skill of turning a cheap tin of baked beans into a reasonable meal in five minutes or less. Is it reasonable for them to have their health or potentially unhealthy habits scrutinised as well?
Obviously, not being able to smoke would free up some of that bursary cash to add some variety to a student nurse’s diet, and it should increase their life expectancy, but is it also a infringement on their personal rights?
The authors of the report are concerned about the public seeing nursing students smoking causing the implication that smoking is perhaps not that unhealthy after all.
Should healthcare workers only be able to smoke in public if they are not wearing their uniforms? As long as they can guarantee that they are not going to meet any of their patients, obviously.
Perhaps they could make it compulsory for student nurses to spend some time working with terminal lung cancer patients and let them make their own mind up after that?
