Chancellor Limits Nurse Pay Rises to One Percent From 2011

A pay incease is still a pay increase, right?

December 09, 2009

Chancellor Alistair Darling has set out plans to limit public sector pay rises to one percent from 2011 and this includes nurses and healthcare workers.

Speaking in his Pre-Budget Report in Parliament today, Mr Darling said that he will cap all public sector pay settlements at one percent for two years from 2011.

He claimed that the changes were made from a ‘position of strength’ He said “while the period ahead is going to be challenging, our public services are in a better state they have been for decades. But we have to be realistic – the spending environment will be tough over the next few years.”

He also discussed making cost savings saying that: “Already individual departments have made great strides in finding savings – £10bn in the NHS, £800m in education, over £400m in the police. But, even in this much tighter financial environment, we are determined to protect frontline services and sustain the improvements that have been delivered over the past decade.”

Mr Darling went on to announce that contributions by the state to public service pensions for teachers, local government, NHS and the civil service will be capped. So by 2012 contributions by the state to public service pensions for teachers, local government, NHS and the civil service will be capped. He also stated that public sector workers will make a greater contribution to the increasing value of pensions.

Dave Prentis, General Secretary of UNISON, the UK’s largest public sector union, today reacted angrily to the 1%, two year pay cap and pensions cap on public sector workers, announced in the pre-budget report, saying:

“I am not going to sign up to this. I know how our members feel – they feel angry and betrayed. It is just not on to make nurses, social workers, dinner ladies, cleaners and hospital porters pay the price for the folly of the bankers.

He went on to say: “Capping pension contributions will reduce the already small public sector pensions even further. The average pension in local government is just £4,000 a year and less than £2,000 for women. This predicted £1bn savings could end up being paid out as benefits to those very same workers to keep them out of poverty in retirement.”

Have your say:
Can the government get away with a 1 percent public sector pay increase?

It would be nice to at least get a cost of living rise !!! 1% is a joke, why bother !! No wonder people leave nursing to higher paid professions.

Perhaps I, like our greedy, corrupt MP's should dip my nose in the money trough and start claiming bogus 'expenses' to boost my pathetic Staff Nurse income, eh? Oh! Hang on - that would be actually commiting a blatant act of fraud and I could go to prison... Unless I'm an arrogant, out-of-touch, scumbag MP - 'cos then I could blatantly plunder the taxpayer's purse for my own use and wave two fingers, with a sneer on my face, at the public when they complain...

I think nurses should be paid at a higher rate, after all they are relied upon when people need the health services.Compared to other public sector pay, nurses do not do that well.

I suppose the government can get away with a 1 percent public sector pay rise, or maybe not, I can see alot of the other public sectors - firemen etc - threatening strike action, I'm sure there are many other ways to save money, for example why does someone who has been a prime minister end up with a pension in excess of 95 thousand pounds a year, some of these people are still young enough to work why can't they get another job, or is that a stupid question, I can't imagine someone like Tony Blair being welcome serving petrol at sainsbury why do bank workers get such huge bonuses, I accept I get a good salary for working as a nurse but its not as good as many other jobs. I say shame on the government I bet they would be the first to complain if they needed a hospital bed but couldn't get one because of cut backs.
