Nursing Management

Who would be a Senior Nurse? It’s not just the patients in the ward in front of you who need to be cared for and treated, it’s all those waiting to take their place in the bed.

You try to get the best use of out of the available resources but there’s always something, or someone, causing an extra complication to thwart you and your team’s best efforts.

In this section we look at some articles by Julie Wright, co-author of We All Fall Down the management textbook written in the style of a novel that shows how to free up healthcare bed resources without significant financial investment.

Julie has used the Theories of Constraints (ToC) a scientific-based series of theories to find the Core Problem of the healthcare industry – the one problem that causes all the other ones we have to deal with on a daily basis. Curious about what the Core Problem is? Here’s a hint – it involves the wrong people making important decisions.

As well as the articles and book excerpts, there is also a challenge for us all to think about what is causing problems on our wards. Once these problems are written down we can share them and see if other people have already found the solutions!

Medics as Managers ? Why we need people who actually understand the nursing systems to make management decisions.

Why So Many of Healthcare’s Fixes Fail to Stick- Do the people at the top really know what they are talking about?

Widgets, Walking Sticks or Weddings ? A reminder that healthcare is a service industry and cannot be treated like a factory!

Chapter 1 of We All Fall Down- Does this sound anything like your local hospital?

It’s your turn! An invitation to head for the forum where you can share both your problems and solutions!
