Career Paths in Nursing: Midwife

ProNurse

Job description

Just like a dog is not just for Christmas, a midwife is not just for the birth. They provide support for people who need advice on conceiving through the whole process of pregnancy to 28 days after the birth, when they pass responsibility on to a Health Visitor.

As well as assisting at the birth and caring for newborns they also provide support and education for both the woman and her partner. They work as independent practitioners, involving doctors only when there is a medical problem that affects the mother’s or child’s safety.

Salary

Enter at Band 5, with experience work up through each band to the level of Band 8a-c for Midwife Consultant

Education Requirements

You need a Midwifery qualification which is either a three year diploma or a four year degree. Alternatively Registered Nurses can do a 12-18 months conversion course.

Job Outlook

There has been a shortage of midwives for some time, but there was an issue with a lack of available posts. The Government recently announced that the number of midwives will increase and there is pressure to increase this further so the prospect for midwifery as a career is looking good.
