Nurses Working Outside the NHS or in Large National Organisations

The RCN has around 100,000 members working outside of the NHS in a range of different services from long term care to end of life services, mental health services, occupational health and to education. These members are also employed by a variety of organisations from large corporate bodies to single unit organisations to charities and social enterprises.

The employment relations work has focussed on developing working partnerships and recognition agreements with national and cross-border organisations (this includes both independent sector organisations, but also some NHS and non-NHS public sector organisations).

The employment relations department works closely with organisations to provide the best employment conditions for nurses and health care assistants through collaborative working.

Recognition agreements are formal agreements signed between trade union and employers. Agreements outline and describe the types of issues the organisations will discuss in partnership. Recognition agreements also provide trade union representatives with the mechanism to request time-off to undertake their duties.

See the RCN web site for more information about how the RCN can help you with Recognition Agreements with the main health employers.
