How do I train to be a Midwife?

A midwife gives advice to all types of expectant mothers

ProNurse

The midwifery training format is similar to that for a nurse that is covered in detail in our <a href = " http://www.pronurse.co.uk/benefits/articles/1-ten-steps-to-becoming-a-nurse"> 10 Steps to Become a Nurse series of articles. However, there are some important differences.

• There is only a degree course for midwifery, there is no longer a diploma course
• If you have already qualified as a nurse you can take a ‘short programme’ to qualify as a midwife. This course lasts around two years of full time study.

Midwifery pre-registration programmes

A midwife must either hold a degree in midwifery or complete the midwifery short programme. They then have to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) before they can practice as a midwife.

Pre-registration midwifery degree

This course is half theory and half supervised midwifery practice and usually lasts for three years, although some courses may take four years. The midwifery practice takes place in all areas of the midwife role such as antenatal clinics and wards, labour wards and neonatal care. You will get experience in both community and hospital environments.

Pre-registration midwifery short programme

This course is only for qualified and registered nurses and takes a minimum of 78 weeks working full time. Like the midwifery degree it involves theory and practice in both community and hospital environments Successful graduates receive both a professional and academic qualification

Part-time pre-registration midwifery courses

Part time midwifery courses are available to some NHS staff such as assistant or associate practitioners with qualifications up to the level of NVQ level 3, or its equivalent. The courses last between five and six years and you need to be sponsored by your employer.
