Mental Health Nursing is a complex and very demanding area.
As many as one in three members of the population suffer from some degree of mental health problem.
Neuroses, psychoses, psychological and personality disorders all come under heading of mental health.
Most patients with mental health disorders are cared for in the community.
Mental Health Nurses will be based in a health care centre, day hospital, outpatients department or a specialist unit.
As a mental health nurse you will need to have an understanding of the theories of mental health and illness.
Mental health nurses work as part of a team, which includes GPs. Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, art therapists and HCAs.
The key challenge of mental health nursing is to establish a good therapeutic relationship with both patients and their families.Good communication skills, a strong personality, the ability to empathise with people and show them warmth and understanding are essential in the mental health nurse.
Dealing with the human mind and behaviour is not an exact science. The job of helping people back to mental health is every bit as valuable and satisfying as caring for those with a physical illness.
What qualifications do I need to become a mental health nurse?
The programme is three years in length, beginning with a 12 or 18-month common foundation programme (CFP) followed by an 18 or 24-month programme in the mental health branch.
Fifty percent of the programme is supervised nursing practice, which will takes place both in hospital and the community. Educational requirements for entry to this programme, are the same as for any Diploma of higher education (DipHE) in nursing.
